Solar Power

Solar power is a great option for powering a base… until the sun goes down and you don’t have batteries. It can also be obstructed by mountains / objects in the way. There are two ways to solve these problems, one is logical and one is an “unintended feature” (exploit) .

Solution One –

Align your panels in the most efficient way. You should put rows of them facing in a direction where the sun hits them most often. On Earth this is North / South, so the light hits them for the entire day, but other planets may not rotate similarly. The panels themselves should be on a setup like this –
Keep them elevated and remove obstructions. In my world I had to remove a whole mountain. xD

Solution Two –

Warning: this might be hard to pull off. Let’s science the **** out of this…
Unlike Earth, planets in astroneer are not tilted on their axis. This creates a phenomenon at the true North and South poles where the sun rotates around you instead of going below the horizon. If you create a large tower over the pole and put solar panels at all sides, it creates UNLIMITED POWER.
I made a more detailed guide on this years ago, and I am not sure if this still works…

Wind Power

Wind power is extremely unreliable, unless you are on a planet with high wind. I always keep some solar panels and batteries just in case. Moving base to a windier planet always helps. Some planets, like the moon, have almost no wind. Check the astro-pedia for info on the planets.

Generators
Generators are good for early game, but are annoying to keep fueled. I would recommend switching to solar / wind quickly. If you are in an emergency, the small generator works well.

RTGs

RTGs provide unlimited, free, and easy power. They are extremely late game and annoying to craft.
I have never gotten one, so here is a random picture instead.

Batteries

Batteries store power. (Obviously.)

Tip: 8 small batteries on a medium storage have more power output than one large battery. They also only cost lithium each, instead of lithium and zinc.

You need to explore other planets to find lithium now.
