STAR WARS™: Squadrons Custom Gamepad Control Scheme

Posted on October 4, 2020

For STAR WARS™: Squadrons players, if you’re having trouble with the Default controller settings, these are a good alternative, and should help you improve your flying right away. Optimized for Xbox One controller.

Custom gamepad control scheme

Hey everybody! So I’ve been playing flight sims on gamepad for a couple of years (and specially Elite for like a thousand hours), and I’ve been playing and tweaking SWS for probably around 12 hours now, and I found a setup for the Xbox one controller that has been really great so far, and I’ve been successful in pvp, getting 10~15 kills every match. I don’t know if anybody else is struggling with the controls, but I thought I’d share my settings here in case anybody wants to try them out. This should give you a good amount of control in terms of ship maneuverability while still changing a couple of trivial settings on the fly without taking your hands off the left stick.

Custom settings are as follow:

  • Pitch up: Left stick up
  • Pitch down: Left stick down
  • Yaw right: Left stick right
  • Yaw left: Left stick left
  • Roll right: RB
  • Roll left: LB
  • Throttle increase: RT
  • Throttle decrease: LT
  • (Combo – double tap) Boost: X
  • Fire: A
  • Fire Left Auxiliary: Right stick Left
  • Fire Right Auxiliary: Right stick Right
  • Deploy Countermeasures: B
  • (Combo) Power to engines: D-pad left
  • (Combo) Power to weapons: D-pad up
  • (Combo) Power to Shields: D-pad right
  • (Combo) Balance power: D-pad down
  • Balance power: LS (press Left stick)
  • Target ahead: RS (press right stick)
  • Cycle targets: Select

Other important settings:

  • Throttle input: Continuous
  • Throttle step increments: 0%
  • Drift input mode: Double tap
  • Controller pitch sensitivity: 75%
  • Controller yaw sensitivity: 75%
  • Controller roll sensitivity: 85%
  • Controller throttle sensitivity: 85%

Alternate layout

I’ve changed a few things, so consider this another option in case you wanna try it out. I found this way more consistent so you don’t need to take your finger off the left stick while changing the power output. I’ll still keep the old version up, but this is a good alternative.

Give these a shot and let me know if it works out – I’m still thinking of changing a couple of things, but my performance went up like 200% after I changed these.
