Explanations
Like in Lethal Crisis, there are missions that are optional objectives with unique rewards. Like the previous guide I made, all translations come from UnexpectedGenreShift’s playthrough of the game however there is one key difference between this game and Lethal Crisis: Protosphere is a Roguelike, that means upon death you have to start from the beginning. Of course, like other Roguelikes, there are ways to get keep progress between runs to make it easier the next time, until you manage to make it all the way to the end. Stages are also done in chunks of 10, with every 10th stage cleared giving you a check point, and missions are counted per chunk of 10 stages.
With the fact that this a Roguelike, having some understanding of Japanese when it comes to item use (since there are multiple items beyond just Life Charges) helps a lot. There are also the Base Factors which are either permanent upgrades ranging from increasing the amount of storage you have (which lets you carry items between runs, if you use a storage ticket to send the item back) to auto clearing missions you have cleared before or weapons/items that are dropped into your storage that your free to use. These cost Tips, which are earned by selecting the second option when you select a item in your inventory. There are also Blue named weapons, which are automatically stored between runs if you happen to die. For these Base Factors, I have gotten their effects and requirements from this page here[platinumcherry.candypop.jp], which is also a site that has a lot of info on the game.
Something else to note is Sphere Tyrants, which are usable after a event mid boss fight on Stage 50: These are items that are reusable (although are recharged by defeating enemies) that effect the environment from effecting attacks to all sorts of gimmicks. There are two types of gimmicks for each one, a User effect (Only effects the user) and a Field effect. (Effects everyone, but only the most recently used Sphere Tyrant will be in effect) One shared gimmick is that each Tyrant has a Barrier and Timer, the former being a shield for you, and the latter being how long it lasts. Tyrants can also stack. These are used by both the enemy and you, and the most recent used one (regardless of enemy or player) will be shown in effect by having it’s timer tick down.
There are two more things to talk about: Firstly the Config screen, which is mostly the same as Lethal Crisis:
- Blade/Accept
- Jump/Assault/Cancel
- Shot/Charge Shot (Hold)/Sort inventory
- Remove lockon/Burst Mode (Hold)
- Pause/Open inventory
- Turn most recent item into Tips (Must be unlocked via Base Factor first)
- Window setting (Left is Window, Right is Fullscreen)
- Return settings to Default.
- Exit.
Also something to note on the title screen:
Restart is the normal option to continue where you left off on either a run, or starting a new run. (That little icon means that you suspended at a checkpoint. If you select Restart at that point, the game asks if you want to resume or start from the beginning.)
Load Backup let’s you load up a save made at a checkpoint with a Backup Memory item. Note that the Backup is a one time load. Once you load the Backup, it’s erased.
The other thing I wanted to talk about is the checkpoint screen which is thankfully short.
In order:
- Next Stage (Continue the game)
- Make a Backup (You need a Backup Memory item to use this)
- Config screen.
- Suspend.
After unlocking it, there will be a option called Library which lets you examine enemies you have found and items you have picked up across your runs.
