For Sea of Thieves beginners, this guide is to help people who are learning ship talk, by trying to look cool or trying to understand their fellow shipmates.
Ship Talk
Portside means “Left”
Starboard means “Right”
Square means “Forward”Examples:
“Turn the ship starboard!” means “Turn the ship right!”
“Trim the sails square!” means “Trim the sails forward!”
“Enemy ship is portside!” means “Enemy ship is on our left!”

Ship Stats
Sloop
- Smallest ship
- Maximum capacity of 2 crew members
- has one row of cannons (2 cannons)
- Very agile
- Fastest raise anchor time
Brigantine
- A fair balance inbetween the Sloop and Galleon
- Fastest ship (In most situations)
- Maximum capacity of 3 crew members
- Has 2 rows of cannons (4 cannons)
Galleon
- Largest ship
- Maximum Capacity of 4 crew members
- Has 4 rows of cannons (8 cannons)
- Slowest turning speed
- Slowest raise anchor time
- Potentially fastest speed against headwind
