This guide is intended for people who don’t want to spoil the experience or the challenge of Grimrock 2 by looking at a walkthrough, but still need a little help to progress. It won’t tell you directly how to solve any puzzles, but with these minor hints & clues you should get just the push you need in the right direction to solve them yourself.
Introduction
Puzzles are listed by the region in which they appear. Where possible, puzzles are titled by the plaques that introduce them. Some puzzles may feature additional, more “spoilery” hints, which I’ll keep in “spoiler” tags. Only mouse-over those if the first hint wasn’t enough to help you.
Feedback is very welcome! If you find a hint wasn’t enough, please let me know so I can add an extra spoiler-tagged one. Or, if you think a hint gives away too much, let me know and I’ll try to come up with a more generic one.
- X Marks the Spot
you should mark the spot - chest behind bars
Sometimes you can reach through bars
- “ARE E.”
This sign features a coded message. You’ll see more of it later.
For now, know that these are always “directions”. In particular, this sign is an instruction on where to dig.
2nd hint: There are other directions besides those featured on a compass
3rd hint: Take a look at the surrounding area. What combinations of directions and steps are possible? For example, could you head right three times from this sign?
- The Four Plagues
Think of things that would help you “deal” with each individual “plague”
- Reflection
All levers must be down
- Runemaster’s Test
Think spells
2nd hint: Specifically, the spell being cast in front of you
- Danger!
Observe carefully where the teleporters appear
- Spire of Meditation
Behave like you are meditating - Sky bridges
the gate here on the ground floor is controlled soley by the pressure plates in this room
2nd hint: Not having things on a plate can also trigger things - The high chest
Look on the map; is there a nearby area that looks unreachable? What could be there?
- Archives & Storage
This cypher should look familiar. If you solved the “ARE E.” puzzle from Twigroot forest, apply that knowledge here. If a direction isn’t possible, you’ve either interperted it wrong or you’re starting from the wrong place… Tackle the simpler one first, and use the knowledge you gain there on the tougher one. You can also find a scroll that describes this cypher later in the Lexiconary, if you’d rather wait for that.
2nd hint: There is one square in this room that doesn’t have a pressure plate. This is not a coincidence
3rd hint: (for storage) Not all directions actually involve moving
- Scroll, Stone, Sword
Think game
2nd hint: A very simple game
3rd hint: A game that requires nothing but your hands - Path of the Eagle
Take a risk – the biggest risk you can (in this room)
2nd hint: A Leap of Faith - The Disgused Path
How did you get here? Now you must go back the same. But this time, it’ll be a lot less straightforward - The Lexiconary
The unique items that go in these alcoves are all found in this region
2nd Hint: You just need to make sure that the posted sign is “true” for the figure you put in its alcove
- Tetris Puzzle
People read in a certain order
2nd hint: You can find a scroll related to this room in the area above it…
