Shelter 2: Guide for Beginners

Hello, my fellow Lynx Mommas! Today, I’m going to be showing you some bad-a$$ tips and tricks to being successful in Shelter 2! Please Keep in mind that some of these tricks may work for some, and not others.

Okay. Without any further blabbing.. lets hop right in! ;))

The most efficient and easy way of hunting is using your lynx vision/scent.
Anything you can eat, or is already dead will show up in red.

Rabbits will only feed 2 of your cubs so I recommend going for a group of hares and catching two as I did above. By doing this, you will be able to feed all your cubs.
Keep in mind, when you catch your first one.. quickly drop it on the ground and go for another one except bringing back to your first catch. If you can’t find it, use your lynx vision. Keep track of who has eaten and make sure each of your babies are full.

Rabbits are pretty fast, so it takes some practice to be able to get the hang of catching them.
They spawn pretty much anywhere and leave behind some bones as a reward.. 😉 (Not really..)

Important, never STOP HUNTING FOR FOOD! There is no such thing as being full. Never conserve food, just go for it..Keep in mind if one of your babies is starving, you have a higher chance of running into a fox since they loooove starving cubs, we will get into that soon. Hunt it all hun, your cubs don’t give a hoot how hungry they will be next season, or 2 season from now, they need food now girl! 

Moles/Rats/Voles.
Call them whichever lol!
First of all Voles/Rats much harder to find than Rabbits. They only spawn near their burrows, and don’t spawn in groups. They don’t leave behind anything so don’t bother looking for any collectables from them!
Hunting them is fairly simple and definitely not as complicated as rabbits. They are fairly dumb and will sometimes run into you.

Frogs

Frogs and Moles/Voles are quite similar. Although, they spawn in larger groups and are only found near water during Spring, or Summer.

They are mainly found in bodies of water.

Tip; If you can’t find any food for your cubs, or your running low on stamina..
Drinking water is a great way to get you, and your cubs hunger/stamina while continuing to look for prey.

Deer by far is one of the hardest animals to kill in Shelter 2.

They are definitely much rarer than any other animals, spawn in herds, usually near bodies of water, faster than most animals, and will feed both you, and your cubs! How neat is that?!

HOWEVER…. Be careful, numerous wolf attacks have happened before near deer. I would recommend anyone new to shelter to NOT go find Deer on their first try. You could run into wolves, or get lost and not be able to find your way back to your den which increasing your chances of more predators like eagles, foxes (If you have the mountain DLC), or the “fog” to wipe out your cubs.

How am I to judge? Do it at you own risk!

Killing a deer (for some) tends to be fairly easy.
First start by slowly walking towards it until your reading to pounce!
Then, run to your selected Doe,
when close enough; Jump on it!
You will then kill it… Yay, dinner!

Note; Never chase them towards bodies of water, yes… you can drown. So be careful.
Never sprint too early or too late, you need all the stamina you can get to chase a deer. Always time yourself correctly and you should be successful!

You are probably familiar with wolves due to the fact that their first appearance was made when you first start the game.

However, your real encounter with wolves will be during your playthrough. They most common appearance is at the Tundra. They are not as fast as you but will catch up if you happen to lose stamina. They will eat you cubs if they are too slow.

The most common way to avoid them is to jump onto a ledge. Your cubs will follow if they are adolescents, eventually.. the wolves will leave. They are un-capable of jumping as high as you.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHY THIS BLOB EXISTS BUT WHAT THE HECK?!!?!?
This event occurs oftenly, and near the starting area. The sky will become dark and a “flood” will start to slowly consume THE MAP!!! just kidding, haha! Okay anyways, it will cover a majority of the map, to escape get to high ground or run to your den, meowing constantly at you cubs so none paralyze in fear or get left behind.

If you don’t walk towards it you should be okay! However, some cubs freeze in fear and end up dying by this mysterious and unnecessary “blob”. Your cubs CAN die if they touch the flood but this doesn’t always happen. If your cubs paralyze in fear, make sure to pick them up!!

Okay, so.. this is preference but.. the starting area for me is the best since I have not once ran into any predators or wolves there.. KNOCK ON WOOD.

My best advice is if you don’t stray too far away from your starting den, and incase of emergency are in running distance of your den, you should be okay! I have lived off of rabbits ever since!

For me, this is my best area, and its okay to be paranoid because those are the best mommas! ;))

If you keep all these tips and advice in mind, you should make the best lynx mommy ever!!!
Also a lil’ side note for my overly-loving mommies!

If your cubby happens to die, don’t stress, it happens! It could be a glitch or a bug, this absolutely does NOT mean you are a terrible mother!! Accidents DO happen and they’ve happened to all of us. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find your groove! If one or two happens to die.. there is a positive side! 2 less mouths to feed! No more starving cubs!
