For RuneScape players, this is a brief combat progression guide i put together a while ago, the goal of the guide is to help out newcomers and veterans alike, i hope it proves useful.
Introduction
You’ll find more information in the always useful “Weapons & Armour Perks Guide”[runescape.wiki] from the Wiki and the “PVM Encyclopedia Discord”[discordapp.com] two of the most essential resources for all your PVM & Slayer needs.I’ll start off this guide with my “Boss Progression list”, but keep in mind it is always good to experience these bosses yourself and measuring how easily/efficiently you can kill them. The following are just guidelines 🙂
For all my bossing, I use a “Standard Revolution Bar” with a size of 6, Whilst also trying to maximize my DPS,as shown in the following video playlist.
“For more info about your revolution action bar, check the PVM Encyclopedia “DPM Section” pertaining to your combat style”
Also, it’s important to note that, while using the revolution combat mode,it’s better to manually trigger your threshold abilities and properly cancelling your channeled abilities (as shown in this other example).
Gear and weapons (Melee)
The following list is a recommended progression for your Melee gear, there are other kinds of armour like: Runite, Orikalkum, Necronium, Banite, Etc, however, those are considered as “Tank Armour” which only provide a defensive bonus instead of a damage bonus, for that end, Power armour[runescape.wiki] helps you by dealing more damage, while Tank Armour[runescape.wiki] only increases your defence, but not the damage you deal to the bosses, therefore, we’ll disregard tank armour for the rest of the guide.
- Recommended budget armour:
- Dragon Equipment[runescape.wiki].
- Barrows Equipment[runescape.wiki].
- Bandos Armour[runescape.wiki].
- Recommended optimal armour:
- Anima Core of Zaros (Unrefined)[runescape.wiki].
- Torva Armour[runescape.wiki].
- Masterwork Armour[runescape.wiki]
- Trimmed Masterwork Armour[runescape.wiki].
-
- The following list is a recommended progression for your weapons, on this part there are a few considerations to take note of, for instance, Melee has 2H Weapons and Dual Wield weapons, each with their own unique abilities, there’s also
shields [runescape.wiki]
-
- that allow the use of Defensive Abilities, and
defenders[runescape.wiki]
-
- who allows the use of both defensive and offensive abilities, but, in order to keep things simple, we will focus on 2H and Dual Wield Weapons for each style.
-
-
- Recommended 2H weapons:
- Saradomin/Zamorak/Bandos/Armadyl Godsword[runescape.wiki]
- Masuta’s Warspear[runescape.wiki]
- Noxious Scythe[runescape.wiki]
- Zaros Godsword[runescape.wiki]
-
-
- Recommended Dual Wield weapons:

The following list is a recommended progression for your Ranged gear, similar to the Melee Armour section, we will disregard tank armour and will focus on power armour. As a side note, you can also use shields for ranged and “defenders”; although for this particular style, the defenders are known as “Reprisers”[runescape.wiki] instead, these also allow the use of defensive and offensive abilities.
- Recommended Budget armour:
- Demon Slayer Armour[runescape.wiki]
- Karil the Tainted Armour (Barrows)[runescape.wiki]
- Armadyl Armour[runescape.wiki]
- Recommended optimal armour:
- Anima Core of Zamorak[runescape.wiki]
- Pernix Armour[runescape.wiki]
- Sirenic Armour[runescape.wiki]
The following list is a recommended progression for your weapons, on this part there are a few considerations to take note of, for instance, Bows only use Arrows[runescape.wiki] and they cannot use any other type of ammo, likewise, Crossbows and Dual Wield Crossbows only use Bolts[runescape.wiki], the only weapons that do not require ammunition however, are the chargebows [runescape.wiki](like the Decimation, Zaryte Bow and Seren Godbow on this list).
- Recommended 2H Bows:
- Decimation Bow[runescape.wiki]
- Zaryte Bow[runescape.wiki]
- Noxious Longbow[runescape.wiki]

- Recommended Dual Wield Crossbows:
- Karil’s Pistol Crossbow
- Ascension Crossbow[runescape.wiki] & Off-Hand Crossbow[runescape.wiki]
- Blightbound Crossbow[runescape.wiki] & Off-Hand Crossbow[runescape.wiki]
Gear and weapons (Mage)
The following list is a recommended progression for your Mage gear, similar to the previous sections, we will disregard tank armour and will focus on power armour. As a side note, you can also use shields for ranged and “defenders”; although for this particular style, the defenders are known as “Rebounders”[runescape.wiki] instead, these also allow the use of defensive and offensive abilities.
- Recommended budget armour:
- Lunar Armour[runescape.wiki]
- Ahrim the Blighted Armour[runescape.wiki]
- Robes of Subjugation[runescape.wiki]
- Recommended optimal armour:
- Anima Core of Seren[runescape.wiki]
- Virtus Armour[runescape.wiki]
- Tectonic Armour[runescape.wiki]
The following list is a recommended progression for your weapons, on this part there are a few considerations to take note of, for instance, all spells need Runes[runescape.wiki] in order to be casted from their respective Spellbooks[runescape.wiki], the runes required vary depending on each of the spell being casted.
- Recommended 2H Staves:
- Ahrim’s Staff[runescape.wiki]
- Obliteration[runescape.wiki]

- Wand of the Praesul[runescape.wiki] & Imperium Core[runescape.wiki]
The Boss List
I’ll list the bosses below from “easiest to hardest”, with their respective video guide and wiki article. Assuming you’re using at least Barrows Armour, Tier 80 Weapons, and the appropriate protection potions like:
- Antiposion ++[runescape.wiki]
- Antifire[runescape.wiki]
- Overload Potion[runescape.wiki]
- Adrenaline Potion[runescape.wiki]
Or, if you have access to them
Elder Overload Salve[runescape.wiki]
Spiritual Prayer[runescape.wiki]
https://runescape.wiki/w/Adrenaline_renewal_potion#(4)
Along the appropriate protection Prayers [runescape.wiki](like: Protect from Melee, Ranged, Mage) or Curses [runescape.wiki](like: Deflect Melee, Ranged, Mage, Soul Split). Additionally, you could also bring a familiar like the following ones:
- Spirit Terrorbird[runescape.wiki]
- War Tortoise[runescape.wiki]
- Steel Titan + Scrolls[runescape.wiki]
- Pack Yak[runescape.wiki]
- Ripper Demon + Scrolls[runescape.wiki]
And, if you have access to it, Invention Perks also help out a lot, Entry Level Perks[runescape.wiki] should do just fine until you can afford Best in Slot perks.
- Additional notes:
The unlisted bosses of this post require you to be inside a team/group to kill, so I’ll skip those for the time being. As you get progressively better, your encounters should become faster and more consistent, but don’t forget to always be ready for everything like: Disconnections, lag spikes, misplaced abilities, forgotten gear/runes/weapons, but most impotantly, do not panic and always be wary of your limits. For that end, a Ring of death[runescape.wiki] is always a life-saver; for the aforementioned reasons, so buy one when you have the opportunity.
Finally, make sure you have unlocked the War’s retreat teleport[runescape.wiki],as this is the place you want to visit to prepare for the upcoming fights.
All bosses listed above can net you some good uniques and expensive loot; from a simple Armadyl Crossbow[runescape.wiki] to a Mutated Barge Codex[runescape.wiki], of course, group bosses can give you even more expensive loot (Nex Angel of Death[runescape.wiki], Solak[runescape.wiki], Vorago[runescape.wiki]), but assuming you’re killing bosses outside a group (Solo), these are some of the best bosses, in my opinion and personal experience, for good money.
In no particular order and varying in difficulty we have:
QBD is in here because she gives you excellent resources (Rocktails, Sara Brews), she’s very easy to kill (even on mobile), but also really fun.
