For Katamari Damacy REROLL players, this is a quick guide about the complete collection of the game, if you are trying to collect all in game, just follow this guide.
Introduction
hello, my name is pimittens and i currently hold the world record for both of the complete collection speedrun categories in katamari damacy reroll and well as the world records for the complete collection category in katamary damacy (ps2) and we love katamari (my speedrun profile for reference[www.speedrun.com]). i am making this guide because while there is already a steam guide for complete collection it leaves out a lot of useful resources and information.
overview and useful info: there are 1438 unique objects in the game which need to be collected. once the collection has been completed, going to the collection screen will result in the king giving the prince 5 balloons instead of one
in order for the objects you collected during a level to save in your collection you must reach the goal size of the level before quitting. you do not need to wait for the timer to run out; once you reach the goal size you can quit the level from the pause screen. the exception to this is the constellation levels, which will be discussed later.
fun fact: in the ps2 version, specific instances of objects needed to be collected to fill out the “names” section. in reroll they removed this for some reason and picking up any object of the same category as the named object will suffice so you will naturally fill out the section by completing the collection.
Object locations spreadsheet
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ntn0n9jeb8Mtcw5XwtRG-KlEOEJbOVEDb6Hla2TnkEg/edit?usp=sharingthis will probably be the most useful resource for finding any objects you are missing. many of the tabs are not useful and/or obsolete so we will only be talking about the first one (items by location). there are also pages for the we love katamari collection if you’re interested in that.
info about the spreadsheet: this sheet was made my me with help from fellow katamari speedrunners martini and grass. this sheet was made specifically for the complete collection speedrun category which means that some of the info might be hard to understand for casual players. the “best time to collect” column can basically be ignored since the purpose of this column was to decide which level was ideal for picking the object up in the speedrun. the term “any%” means the speedrun category where you complete the game as quickly as possible. since we have to play the any% route on most levels in the speedrun objects that we pick up during these routes are marked either “on any% route” or “unmissable”. any such objects are likely easy to find and i will provide more resources for locating them later in the guide.
abbreviations:
“mas” stands for “make a star” (the main levels of the game)
“mtm” stands for “make the moon” (the final level of the game)
special levels
this section will cover the levels outside of the main levels (mas/mtm).
constellations:
in the constellation levels rather than a goal size there is a goal number of constellation objects that you must collect to finish the level. these goals are as follows:
cancer – 10 crabs
cygnus – 30 swans
pisces – 60 fish
corona borealis: 20 crowns
virgo – 80 maidens
gemini – 22 pairs of twins (2 objects that are the same or similar count as 1 twin)
in the constellation levels you cannot exit the level early and must wait for the timer to expire. i have created a mod that removes this restriction while keeping the object goal requirements which is used in a separate complete collection category (1438 objects rba) to make for a more interesting speedrun as there are no longer autoscrollers. if you want to download this mod instructions and a download link can be found in the katamari speedrunning discord (link at the end of the guide). if not using the mod just make sure you don’t quit these levels early.
cow/bear:
these levels are infamous because the level ends as soon as you pick up a cow or bear respectively. in the speedrun we only get the objects on these levels that cannot be found on any other level with a couple of small exceptions. the best way to learn how to play these levels is to watch a video so check the video section for this. there is only one bear (kintaro bear) that is unique to the bear level, but there are 5 cow objects that are only available on the cow level so you will have to play that one multiple times.
polaris/north star:
this level doesn’t have any objects that are not available elsewhere other than the cousin (cousins have not been discussed yet and will be in a later section). you can end the level once you reach 5m. the giant watermelons in the farm area are 4m76cm2mm so once you are big enough to pick them up picking up a few of them will get you to 5m and allow you to finish the level. note that to exit the level you must press x to tell the king you are ready, exiting from the pause screen will not work.
eternals:
there are three eternal levels in the game which are essentially copies of the corresponding levels (mas4, mas8, and mtm) and have no time limit. these levels have no goal so they can be exited at any point and the objects you collected will be saved. in order to unlock these levels you must have completed mtm on your save file and reach a certain size on each of the applicable levels. these sizes are:
mas4 – 1m30cm
mas8 – 25m
mtm – 800m
you will also know you have reached the required size when you see angels that look like the prince circling your katamari.
cousins
each level in the game has a cousin of the prince (two on gemini) that can be collected, but these cousins must first be unlocked before they will show up on levels. in order to unlock them you must first complete mtm on your file at least once. additionally, you must complete the level you wish to get the cousin on at least once. this means that you will have to play every level at least twice in order to get all of the cousins. the exception is the eternal levels, on which the cousins will appear the first time you play them.
ring luck
note: there is a place where you can get a guaranteed ruby ring spawn. this is on mas3 under the red car. if you need this ring specifically you can just get it here
videos and other resources
https://noclip.website/
this very cool website allows you to view levels from many video games, including katamari damacy. this can be very useful if you are having trouble finding an item on a specific level.object images:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OFbayXrYX9om7r10bx9Evq-6PD8PuFIT/view?usp=sharing
this folder contains images of every object in the game in case you need to know what something looks like. the original collection of images was compiled by a twitter account called @KatamariItems.
since the images were originally named “item 1”, “item 2” etc i renamed them with the actual object names so they can be easily searched.
videos:
here is my current 1438 rba run (using the mod so i don’t have to wait for the constellation timers to run out). the splits will probably make it easier to find the section you’re looking for.
this playlist contains video guides that explain how to play the 1438 category. at the time of writing this series is incomplete so for any sections that have not been covered yet you will have to use the complete run video.
