Letters From a Rainy Day -Oceans and Lace- players might encounter the problem of the game won’t start, and not supported media type “psb”, after attempting save data recovery, this guide is about how I meet this problem and how I fix it.
PROBLEM:
I was playing and had to leave the computer for a bit, I locked windows (Win+L) (a habit), when I returned and unlocked windows and tried to continue playing, I got and error message that said something like “unable to get bitmap memory” (not the exact error message). The game then asked me if I would like to attempt to recover my save data, to this I clicked “Yes”.
After that every time I tried to start the game it would just show a black screen and give the error message ‘Not supported media type “psb”‘
FIX:
The problem is the file “data_emergency.ksd” in your save data folder.
Apparently there is a problem with the attempt to recover your save, if this file is present it will keep trying and failing to recover your save data and exiting the game.
If you just try to delete this file the Steam Cloud keeps re-downloading it, so here’s a way to solve it:
- – go to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\475761029\1637370\remote
- – replace
data_emergency.ksd
with an empty file (make a new text file and rename it to “data_emergency.ksd”)
- – set it to Read-only (right click -> properties -> check Read-only)
Now Steam can’t write to the file so it can’t re-download it, and without the data in the file I guess the game gives up trying to restore the save.
After running the game once you can un-check Read-only (so if the devs ever fix the issue you can use the data recovery feature)
And from now on if your game ever crashes, remember to say no to the data recovery!
