For Cat and Ghostly Road players, this is a text walkthrough to guide you through the game and to 100% achievements. Let’s check it out.
Intro
Here’s a very-unoptimized text walkthrough for Cat and Ghostly Road. I muddled through it with the help of this walkthrough video and some of the topics in the discussions forum, particularly the dev’s answers to how to get the ‘Broom’ and ‘Another Lamp’ achievements.
This game doesn’t display the achievements popping up, so not all achievements are marked. I only mark ones I believe to be things that aren’t tied to story progression, like the two mentioned above.
It’s not very elegant, but following this guide should get you all achievements in one run (as long as you DO NOT pick up any feathers other than the feather out of the lantern!)
The Painter’s Wish
When you take control of the old painter, talk to the cat, Yang, and go outside.
There’s a bucket next to a little spring in the lower left. Pick up the bucket, then select your bag in the upper right quadrant of the screen. This opens up the inventory. Select the bucket, then select the ‘hand’ icon. Your cursor is now carrying the bucket.
Drag the bucket to the spring and you’ll get a bucket of water.
Next to the entrance of the hut is a hoe and a seedling. Collect them both.
Move over to the right a little and till the dark brown soil among the grass, then drop the seedling in. Finally, pour the water over it. Satisfied, return the painter inside.
The Same Night
You now control Yang – have Yang to to sleep on his little mat.
After the cutscenes, Yang’s on the case!
Head over to the ladder to go up to the attic. Select the three-eyed Yang icon in the upper right. The spirit of the house will appear in the center of the attic – talk to them!
When you’re done, walk past the spirit to the red cabinet and open the two drawers and the swinging doors. In the left drawer you’ll collect a little red pouch, which becomes Yang’s inventory. In the upper compartment you’ll see a glowing white earring – a ghost’s earring.
Speak to the two swinging heads and, when you’re done, give the woman’s head the earring. They’ll bounce and drop the painter’s seal – pick it up.
Before you leave the attic, stop and look up. You’ll see three hanging bundles of herbs drying upside down overhead. Pick up the herbs in the middle and return to the painter’s room.
Drop the herbs in the teapot and select the three-eyed Yang icon again. Use the painter’s seal on the center painting to create a portal to the spirit world.
Into the Painting
Talk to the frog sitting on her mountain of coins, then take the wasp nest hanging in the tree next to him. You can examine the bird skull at the tree’s base, then talk to the frog in the pond. If you activate Yang’s spirit sight, you’ll see the ghost of the crane stalking the pond. At the edge of the pond, there’s some white clay for you to pick up.
Talk to the monk with his wares, too. On the monk’s right side, leaning against some rocks, is a broken drum for you to collect. Continue on to the left.
This deposits you on a little shoreline. There’s a scallop shell for you to collect next to the rocks, and if you walk Yang forward a little bit, you’ll see some coin to pick up previously blocked by his head. Above him, on the swaying pine branch, is some pine resin for you to pick up.
If you approach the shore, a carp will swim up for you to talk to.
In your inventory, combine the pine resin to the scallop shell by dragging one to the other, creating dried resin.
Return to the right and give the two coins in your inventory to the monk, and he’ll give you an oil lamp. Combine the oil lamp with the dried resin to get liquid resin.
Combine the wasps nest with the broken drum… to put wasps inside the drum. Finally, combine the wasp drum with the white clay to seal it. Turn on Yang’s spirit vision and return to the pond, and give the drum to the crane’s ghost to watch her shake it like a polaroid picture.
Turn of Yang’s spirit sight and talk to the little frog, who thanks you and tells you her big sister will help you now. Return to the big frog on the mountain of coins and talk to her, too, and pick up your new coin.
Give the coin to the monk and he’ll give you a dragon talisman. It’s broken, though, but he gives you a free gourd with it! Use the liquid resin on the amulet to repair it and return to the shore.
Give the dragon talisman to the carp, giving him the courage to try to become a dragon. This will put you in a minigame where you have to help the carp dodge debris as he tries to climb the river (if you fail, try again! I think if you skip, you won’t get the ‘Dragon’ achievement). When he makes it to the top, he’ll become a dragon, and return to talk to you.
He gives you some pearls as thanks, and takes you to a new location safely, swimming over bloodthirsty merpeople.
On the Far Coast
Click around on all of the different things as you like to hear Yang’s take on them, then walk along the path of coins until you see a black gold-plated dragon. There’s a dead rat for you to pick up laying in the grass above Yang.
Talk to the dragon, then take the pearls from your inventory and drop them in the little mount of dirt in the grass roughly between the two skulls. Take your gourd and get some seawater to use for the pearl tree. It will sprout, and you can then climb up it.
Walk along the branch to talk to the floating gentleman eating a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of peaches. When you’re done, head down by clicking the arrow to the left of the man. You’ll be deposited somewhere new!
VERY IMPORTANT: DO NOT collect any feathers. Be careful where you click! Collecting feathers OTHER than the Phoenix feather will invalidate the ‘Broom’ achievement, per the devs. There’s a red feather to the left of the boulder in the background, and a brown feather in the tree to the left a little further on. This game autosaves after everything – I quit out as soon as I realized I picked up the feather and it was still in my inventory! I had to start over! Don’t be me!
As you walk to the left, you’ll see two bundles of lilies of the valley growing. Pick them both. There’s a hidey-hole at the base of the tree they were growing next to – click on it to reveal it and then pick up the things that come out – a flint, a stone, and an incense stick.
Continuing to the left, you’ll see a cat woman chained to a tree, playing mournfully. Feel free to speak with her. Beyond her to the left is a lantern with oil. Combine the flint and the starter to create a ‘cap’, and then light the lantern with it. Light the stick of incense at the lantern, too.
Return to the far right of the screen, where the stone pillars are. Fill your gourd in the fresh spring next to it, and place the two lilies of the valley in the two flower vases at the base of the center stone. If you pour water into the bowl, you’ll be sent back to the floating old man. We don’t need to see him yet, though, so leave it be for now.
Return to the trapped cat woman. Activate Yang’s spirit vision and you’ll see a demon floating behind her, menacing. Light the incense stick in the lantern, then place it in the nearby incense holder. The demon will fall asleep. Now that he’s asleep, you can grab the key from him.
If you try to use the key on the cat woman, it won’t let you, it’s ‘otherworldly’. Open the little box next to her and use the key on its mirror, bringing it to this side.
Use the key on the lock on the cat woman’s neck and she’ll thank you, giving you a warning as well as a mask that can give you a humanlike form.
At the Bridge
Head over to the next screen. You’ll see a woman crying on a bridge – talk to her and she’ll tell you she dropped her fan and asks you to get it for her. Hmm…
If you activate Yang’s spirit vision, you’ll see her as a skeletal ghost roaming the bridge – approach the bridge to have her lash out at you, making Yang hiss (this unlocks the ‘Fright’ achievement).
Take the dead rat in your inventory and throw it into the river, distracting the spirit so it eats. Run across the bridge and over to another side. DO NOT pick up the black feather on the rock in the background!
If you still have your spirit vision up, a mushroom spirit will approach you. Talk to him, then deactivate your spirit vision to reveal a teeny mushroom in the middle of the road. Pick him up!
Use your cat mask to become humanlike, then pick up the parasol from the tree branches. Exit off to the left.
Further in the Forest
It’s raining here! Talk to the monk statue, then go past him. Turn on your spirit-vision and talk to the mushroom princess sitting on the boulder. Give her the mushroom, so she isn’t lonely. (This unlocks ‘Heart Combiner’)
Between the mushroom princess and the monk statue is a tall reed of bamboo. Take it (you might need to be in human form for this – I was.)
In your inventory, combine the bamboo stick with the parasol you picked up to make an umbrella. Give it to the monk statue for the rain to stop.
A spider spirit will crawl out of the nearby lamp. It asks you not to light this lamp so his home won’t be destroyed. He says there’s a dirty feather in his lamp, so examine the lamp to get it. (This unlocks ‘Friendly’)
Light the other lamp next to the mushroom princess instead and dip the feather in the clear spring. Now, head all the way back to the first lamp you lit, next to where the cat woman was. Use the damp feather on THAT lamp to reveal the feather’s true form – the phoenix feather! Pick it up! (This unlocks BOTH ‘Phoenix Feather’ and ‘Another Lamp’.)
Return to the stone pillars and pour the water from the gourd in. It will create a cloud that will take you back up to the old man. Give him the Phoenix Feather and you’ll have a conversation with him. He sends you off to –
The Soul Garden
There’s a branch on the ground nearby – pick it up. Above the cat, stuck in a tree, is a strange tooth – get that, too. Pick up another twig in the background off to the left after you cross the bridge.
There’s a third twig next to the lantern to the right of the casket.
Combine the three twigs and put them beneath the cold lock of the casket. Use the firestarter to melt the lock. Turn into a human and reach into the hole in the nearby tree to get a dark seal. Use that dark seal where the lock had been for the casket to pop open.
Pick up the heart and read the black scroll. Above the casket, sticking up in the tree like a tree branch, is a weathered black hand of a demon. Take it.
In your inventory, put the heart in the weathered black hang, then stick the fang in it, too. Toss it into the well, then use the ocarina on the smoke that begins pouring out of it. Oh, ♥♥♥♥!
the Garden of the Dead Soul
Walk across the bridge to confront the demon. Talk to it, then use the Ocarina on it to start a minigame.
The ocarina’s holes are laid out like this:
1 4
2 5
3 6
Play this combination:
32161525213
This dispels the demon… for now.
Follow off to the left, bringing you to a cemetery.
Now! If you didn’t collect any of the other feathers back in the forest, there will be a broom waiting for you in the first plot of the cemetery. This will unlock ‘Broom’.
Use that broom to clean off the shrine, and then use the firestarter to light the lantern to the left. Pick up the incense that fell on the ground to the right.
Go along and light all of the lanterns you can see with the firestarter, including the two on the shrine.
Light the incense on one of the lanterns, then place it in the center of the shrine. Take berries off of the little berry plant off to the left of the shrine, and put those berries in the dry ink pot. Place the painter’s seal in the ink pot, then use it on the lantern.
Into the Beyond
You’ll wind up at a ship cemetary. Right where Yang starts off, pick up the fishbone and the two planks. On the rocks above, there’s a thornbush. Use the planks on the water right in front of him.
Talk to the dragon ship and accept the rope when offered. You’ll find yourself on the ship.
Go to the far end and click on the unbroken vase to open it and get a key. Pick up the broken vase piece and then snag the broken string off of the Chinese lute.
Take the gold key and use it on the lock on the red cabinet, opening it up to get a cauldron and a paintbrush. In the inventory, combine the cauldron and the fish bones. Use the firestarter to light the lanterns, scaring away the bats.
Combine the bent wire with the cauldron. Get off of the ship and head to the right. There’s a place for a campfire in the sand – use the cauldron there. Dip the gourd in the ocean and use it on the cauldron. Use the firestarter on the cauldron to get the campfire going.
Use the paintbrush on the fish glue, then use the paintbrush with the vase fragment. Return to the ship and place the fragment into the broken vase to repair it.
Open up the top of the black cabinet and place the thornbush prickles there to keep the rats away.
With all of that done, talk to the dragon ship to get started. Set the lantern in front of him and you’ll head off to –
A Deserted Shore
Get more prickles from the bush a little above the path. Turn on Yang’s spirit vision to reveal a ghost skull beneath a stone right above the path – pick it up. Head off to the left.
Enter the market, and head left, examining anything you’d like. Talk to the cat woman again, then continue left to talk to the kneeling woman holding a cup. If you activate spirit vision, you’ll see she’s a fox! Standing off to the left is a skeleton man – speak with him, too. With spirit vision activated, go back to the right and you’ll see a floating beard. Talk to him, then continue off to the left.
Look around and pick up the bronze knife coin off to the left sitting in the path. If you turn on spirit vision, there’s a poor begging ghost hovering over the alms bowl. Also keep an eye out for the wilted flower and the incense burner. Continue to the left.
Take the cloth from the tree and return all the way right, back to the shore. Use the knife coin on the casket to open it. Pick up the bag of gold coins that falls out, then talk to the black cat-like boogeyman in the casket, and you’ll take it with you.
Now that you’re flush with cash, give the bag of gold coins to the floating beard to get the aromatic oils, give gold coins to the skeleton to get poison, and head to the next screen off to the left to give gold coins to the begging ghost to get some clues!
Getting to the Garden
Return to the ghost market and turn on Yang’s spirit vision. Put the prickles on the fox-spirit’s fur to get the fur you need (be sure to pick it up!) Head back right and stop in front of the mirror on the chest of drawers and clean it with the embroidered cloth. Talk to the face that appears, then give it the boogeyman you had picked up. Friends!
Open up all the drawers and get a key – go over to the right and use the key on the box next to the floating beard. Take the skull inside.
Head one screen to the left. Dump the poison on the flower, killing the aphids… and the flower! Turn on spirit vision to reveal the flower of the dead and pick it to take it with you.
Head to the incense burner and drop in the aromatic oil and the fur. Light it, then position yourself to the right of the incense burner and Yang’s soul will slip from his body.
You’ll be a butterfly floating through the sky. Head left until you come to a pavillion. There’s four constellations to hit – aries, libra, taurus, and gemini (or the third, fifth, seventh, and twelfth icons along the door). Head inside the Moth Palace.
You’ll be fluttering in front of some panels. Arrange them until they look like this:
You know it’ll be correct when a second butterfly spawns. Follow it off to the left and land on the Moth Emperor’s palm. He’ll give you a Seal of Light and Darkness. Return all the way to the right until you touch back down in your body.
Head to the left, through the garden, to the moon gate you can’t get through. Use Yang’s spirit vision to reveal two headless skeletons. Use the two skulls in your inventory to reveal them and they tell you they won’t let you pass. Walk back to the entrance of the garden and the cat woman is there waiting for you. Talk to her, give her the flower of the dead you’ve gotten already, and she’ll give you an invisibility potion.
Use the potion on yourself and head all the way left and go through the moon gate.
Walk along to the left. Use the poison on the biting flowers to get them out of your way. Keep going until you come to a huge Yin-Yang gate. Use the Seal of Light and Darkness on it, and click on it to go through.
Speak with Mistress Yan, and she’ll send you to –
The Demon Cave
Talk to the demon to start the final battle.
Turn on Yang’s spirit vision to give you a hint – Yang will be able to see the cards with the monsters on it. The first round is memorizing where the animal cards are.
The second round is memorizing where the plant cards are.
Finally, the third round is memorizing where the demon cards are. He’ll play dirty this time, you have to use your spirit vision to reveal the REAL demon cards.
He’ll declare that he wins anyway… and send you to an awful vision of the painter’s destroyed hut. All is lost… except…
Use the scroll Mistress Yan gave you and hang it up in the house, and use the painter’s seal to stamp it, bringing you both home.
Explore around the bright yard as much as you wish, and then enter the house to see the credits.
Thank you very much for this perfect walkthrough! Regarding the feathers, I made the experience that I got the “broom” achievement although I had two of them (I had collected them before I read your walkthrough :/ ). Maybe it is only essential to avoid collecting ALL THREE of the non-Phoenix feathers to get this achievement? The achievement I missed was the “another lamp” thing.
