Getting the true ending in Sengoku Rance is less about raw conquest speed and more about sequencing — the order you topple each faction decides which characters can ever join you, and a single wrong auto-declaration can silently lock you out of a recruit forever. I put this together because the historical route punishes guesswork: you can win every battle and still end up unable to field Uesugi Kenshin or Namazu Ran because you cleared the wrong house first.
What follows is my faction-by-faction pass for the canonical route, with the triggers I check before every campaign and the order I hold myself to. None of it is guesswork — it’s the sequence the route expects, plus the spots I wish someone had flagged before I wasted turns.
The Canon Route in Order
The historical route follows a fixed chain of conquests. Break the chain and the automatic events that recruit your roster never fire, so I treat this as a checklist rather than a suggestion.
Hara → Ashikaga (Isoroku joins) → Miko Institution (Natori joins) → Tokugawa (Senhime joins) → Tenshi Cult → Imagawa → Asakura → Hojo (Nanjo Ran joins) → Uesugi (Uesugi Kenshin joins) → Iga → Tanegashima → Akashi → Takuga (Sakamoto Ryoma joins) → Mori (the three sisters join) → Takeda → Cyclops → Shimazu / Demon Army
Hara
Declare war at the start and wipe them out — there’s nothing to hold back for. Once you’re at war with Ashikaga, Hara will declare on you automatically, so you don’t need to manage that trigger yourself.
Ashikaga
An Ashikaga extortion event fires automatically on turn 3 or 4; refuse it and the war declaration triggers. Capture Isoroku and persuade him to defect for the recruit.
Watch the numbers here: if your national power sits at 7 when you take him, Inoue Shigemi and Yamaguchi Tamon join as bonus recruits on top of Isoroku. I always check my power value at this exact moment, because there’s no second chance to trigger those two.
Miko Institution
Visit the miko mansion twice, then declare war on your own initiative. Once the Miko Institution falls, persuade Natori to join.
Later in the main story, high affection between Natori and Tamakane Fuuka opens the Cave of Yamata no Orochi. That’s a prerequisite I’d rather know early than discover after the fact.
Tokugawa
Declare war yourself. After Tokugawa is destroyed, an event recruits Senhime.
She has the nastiest departure rule in the game, so read this before you get comfortable: if Senhime goes three turns without fighting, she leaves permanently. Once you reach Trust, you need to lose three battles to convert her to Love — after that she stops leaving for good. I lost her once by letting her sit idle between campaigns, and it’s a hole you can’t patch.
Tenshi Cult
Break two gourds and the Tenshi Cult war declaration fires on its own. No manual step needed on your part.
Imagawa
Declare war when you’re ready. At the Journey to the Capital event, choose to ignore it — later this lets Okita Nozomi join.
If you trigger the Secret Meeting with Imagawa Yoshimoto event, exposing it wipes Imagawa out immediately, but you lose a CG. I skip that option every time; the recruit line is worth more than the shortcut.
Asakura
Once the Tenshi Cult is gone, an Asakura envoy event fires automatically. Touch Yukihime to trigger the war declaration. After you take the first fort, the story throws a scripted counterattack at you — just let it resolve and take the loss. Fighting it is a waste.
Hojo and Uesugi
These two are locked together, and this is the trap that ruins most first attempts: Hojo and Uesugi must both be in a declared-war state at the same time, or Takeda will swallow one of them a few turns later. Manage them as a pair, not one at a time.
For Hojo: trigger the Hojo Yin-Yang Girl event through a “leave” action to fire the war declaration. The Nanjo Ran learns Suzaku event gives her an attack that one-shots the entire field — you either save-scum around it or pick a different fight. That move needs setup time, so if your damage output is high enough you can try to burst her down first instead.
The Hojo Soun forbids Nanjo Ran from using Suzaku event is what makes her capturable. After you capture Nanjo Ran, the Hojo Soun departure event fires, then the Komatsu abandons treatment event, and only after that should you finish off Hojo.
One landmine worth knowing now: exploring the sixth floor of the oil well finds Hojo Soun, and Nanjo Ran dies from her body bursting. She dies later even if you never explore — so if you want her alive, understand that constraint before you go digging.
Uesugi
After Asakura falls, Uesugi declares war on you. Once you push them back to Sado, Uesugi’s endless night raids begin — they won’t stop until you’ve triggered the Uesugi training event twice.
Then wait a turn for the Uesugi civil war event. The standard play is to kill the envoy and wipe out Uesugi within 5 turns, but there are CGs hiding on the other paths: one for agreeing to peace, and one for killing the envoy without finishing Uesugi in time. If you’re collecting, those two choices matter as much as the conquest does.
Iga
If you have no faction currently in a declared-war state, Iga declares on you first. Easy to forget, easy to plan around.
Tanegashima and Akashi
Same pairing rule as Hojo and Uesugi: Tanegashima and Akashi must both be at war at the same time, or Mori absorbs one of them.
For Tanegashima, declare war, and if you capture Yuzuhara Yuzumi you can persuade the whole faction to surrender outright.
For Akashi, declare war. The homunculus debut brings two scripted counterattacks, and the lollipop event brings one more — all three are unwinnable fights you just sit through. After Akashi is destroyed, choose [Capture him] to get Akashi Fuumaru. There’s also a CG split here: wiping out Akashi before or after the fire pit liberation event gives you a different scene, so decide which one you’re after.
Mori
Declare war. Your first encounter with Kobayakawa Chinu is a scripted fight you can’t win. With at least two regions held, the Decisive Battle event triggers — agree and win to claim a region for free.
Mori Motonari has a hoops requirement: after Sakamoto Ryoma joins, you need to lift Motonari’s curse on the seventh floor of the Izumo Yomi Road maze before he’ll join you. Skipping that floor means skipping the recruit.
Takuga
If no faction is at war, Takuga declares on you. When Takuga is down to just Shikoku, you can trigger the event to seal Shikoku’s gate — I don’t recommend it.
Once Sakamoto Ryoma joins and you’re at war with Mori, the [Ask about Motonari] event becomes available, which is what opens the seventh-floor curse removal in the Izumo Yomi Road maze. After you defeat the youkai Lick-Lick, you get to pick Sakamoto Ryoma’s gender.
Takeda
Declare war. On turn 5 after the declaration, Takeda’s four-hit combo fires — you can rush them down fast enough to dodge it entirely. Destroying Takeda outright only nets you Sanada Toorin as a capture.
The assassin Shingen event is the better route if you want the full roster: it adds Baba Akane, Yamagata Masakage, and Kosaka Masanobu as captures on top of the standard pull.
Cyclops
First trigger the Oshu event to investigate the youkai empire, then challenge Shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro at Saitama — only after that can you declare war.
Once the Four Guardian Deities join you, you can trigger the event that reveals Date Masamune‘s weakness. After seizing his territory, you still have to win a one-on-one duel to close it out.
Shimazu
You can’t attack Shimazu directly — they get replaced by the Demon Army that appears late in the main story. The Gigai duel event needs Majin-ified Kentaro, Hojo Soun, and Rance after thinking up a counter to Gigai in the lineup; anyone else you field gets burned to death. Bring exactly those three or don’t bring anyone.
Alternate Routes
Beyond the historical line, four alternative paths branch off, each with its own trigger window.
| Route | Trigger |
|---|---|
| Kenshin Route | Destroy Ashikaga before breaking all 5 gourds, then trigger the Sado event [Picnic with Kenshin] |
| Ran Route | Destroy Hojo before breaking all 5 gourds, talk to Ran, then descend into the oil cave |
| Isoroku Route | After breaking all 5 gourds, choose [Didn’t find Kouhime] while searching for Kouhime |
| Monkey Kill Route | Abandon the main story from the very start — becomes a pure territorial suppression strategy game |
The gourd count is the pivot for most of these — Kenshin and Ran both depend on finishing their faction before the fifth gourd breaks, so if you’re angling for either, plan your gourd pacing around those two conquests.
